Singing  -  the Best and Easiest Music and Sound Healing Technique

                                               Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

There are many advantages in using Singing as a Music Healing and Sound Healing technique.

1.  Singing is very simple, all you need is yourself.

2.  Singing is very easy, you just open your mouth and sing.

3.  You can sing almost anywhere.

4.  Singing is fun.

5.  Singing gives you more energy.

6.  As you see, hear, and feel singing working, you simply want to sing more often.

7.  Singing has no negative side effects.

8.  Singing makes you feel younger, and more free.

There are many types of singing you can try for self healing, and also to help others too. You can sing any of your favorite songs. It you are not sure of the words, simply make up your own, till you have time to learn the words. If you know what your favorite songs were, when you were a kid, try singing those. If you don't remember which songs you sang as a kid, ask one of your friends and family members. Singing children's songs can be especially healing.

Making up your own songs can be best of all. The body, mind, emotions, and spirit will always use whatever self healing techniques you allow. Your imagination, intuition, may be able to create just the kinds of songs your really need for healing, or to help heal someone close to you. You can try wordless songs, nonsense words, any favorite words about whatever you love, God songs you really enjoy, anything goes and is ok, when you are making it up.

A few minutes of singing here and there, can take you above your problems, help you find solutions to them, and increase the quality of your life. In today's modern society, we are surrounded so much by others music and sounds so much, that we forget the simple beauty of our own living voices.

Let yourself sing, that's what the body and voice are designed for.  Happy Singing. Thanks for reading.

Toning - Used for Centuries for Self Healing.   Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

Like singing, toning has been around as long as man has. Made popular again, by the wonderful book years ago. Toning, the Creative Power of the Human Voice by Elizabeth Laurel Keys. Toning is more sound than music. Basicly anything goes, goans, moans, yells, screams, any kind of vocal expression. Any kind of sound your voice can produce.

Simple vocal expression, vocal release, can get rid of an enormous amount of tension and stress. And is also used by certain kinds of therapists under other names than toning. But toning, describes it pretty good. You tone your voice to tone up your body, emotions, mind, and spirit. Vocal sound release is something found in all ancient civilizations,  most often used during spiritual and healing ceremonies.

Toning, the use of the voice to produce healing sounds is found always in children's games, and playtime. Toning is simply something that once you start doing it, you remember doing it before, and it is one of the easiest and simplest feel good things to do.

As you tone, experiment with rhythm and pitch. Try some long notes, short one, high, low, slide, growl, laugh, cry, and everything and anything inbetween. Let your voice and emotions go. Give them the freedom to make whatever kind of vocal release sounds you need for self healing.

Toning under some fancy names, can run you $200 an hr or more in Beverly Hills. But you can tone for free. If you have kids get them to join in. A group tone experience is always sonicly interesting, and you never know what may happen, sound and healing wise.

So express yourself Toning. Its as fun as singing, but different. And toning improves your singing, just as singing will improve your toning. Anything you do to heal vocally builds on itself and is related sound wise.

   Happy Toning. Thanks for reading.

Chanting - One of the Oldest Healing Techniques, Combines Singing and Toning.

                                                                  Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

The always popular chanting is a combination of singing and toning and is found globally throughout history. Africa, Australia, Asia, Americas, Europe, Greenland, Far East, etc every part of the globe has its own kind of chanting native to the culture and religious beliefs of that part of the globe.

Mankind simply enjoys using the voice for healing in as many different ways as possible. And chanting has always been a favorite healing technique. Good for solo chanting, and also in a small or large group.

Some forms of chanting like Georgian chant have been around for a 1500 years. Other spiritual chants like those of Tibetan monks, and Indian yogis, have been around for thousands more.

Chanting can be like singing, very musical. Chanting can also be more sound like and less musical. It all depends on how you chant. Chants can be long notes, serene, slow, very calming, lowering the heartbeat. Chants can also be wild and free, like for certain kinds of native american indian dances and events.

You can use chanting in your daily life. Use the long, slow, church type chants when you need to relax and unwind. Use the wild and free type faster chanting, when you need an uptempo uplift. Experiment with chanting in different parts of your voice range. Try words of things you love, chant along with records of chants, or simply make up whatever kind of chants your imagination leads you to try.

Two popular words to chant are OM, and HU. HU is one of my favorites. And both have been chanted for centuries globally. For more on HU, go to www.eckankar.org. HU is one of my favorite chants, I call HU, a Love Song to God. And chanting or singing anything with Love can really turn on the healing or self healing.

Chanting, like singing, and toning, can be better than a glass of alcohol, or the pill of the month.  Using your voices natural healing abilities can speed up any kind of other healing program you use, and may even replace them by the sounds and music of your own living voice.

Vocal self healing is also a way of staying healthy, since you don't have to wait till you need healing to do it.

Happy Vocal Sounds. Thanks for reading.

Loving Speech - What You Say Comes Back to Stay.   Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

We don't normally think of speech as being a healing music and sound technique, but speech is vocal music and sound. Talking is just a special form of singing, or you can look at singing as being a special form of talking. Both talking and singing use pitch, rhythm, melody, and harmony to communicate to others.

Singing is more chromatic pitch wise, like black and white keys on the piano, while talking adds microtonal notes, inbetween the black and white keys for a greater variety of pitches than singing. Singing uses a structured rhythm of the song being sung, talking uses whatever speech rhythms, we decide to use. Talking uses a lot more variety of rhythms than singing does. Singing uses the melody that goes with the song, while talking is free to use whatever kind of melody we need to express ourselves.

Singing can use musical harmony, if other singers, or if any kind of accompanying instrument. Talking uses physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual harmony to go with whatever we are saying. What we say outwardly, mirrors our inner states. This charges anything we say, with a much greater impact than just the words themselves. Especially, if the words are something extra negative or extra positive.

Speech can be just as healing, or just as nonhealing as singing, toning, and chanting. It all depends on the intent of what, why, where and how we use our voice.

And with speaking, its who we are speaking to also.  Something we can say to a friend, might mean something totally different to a stranger. For in speaking, we also have to deal with how people react to our words. And the same people will react differently to the same words, depending on the situation also.

Wars have been fought, marriages have ended, jobs have been lost, over something said in anger or meant as a joke. Nowadays we also have to be aware of who around us, can overhear what we are saying.

Last nite, I was having dinner in one of my favorite restaurants. Its in a very ethic neighborhood, and every global ethic group had members there. It was a rainbow of skin colors, cultural, and religious backgrounds. I couldn't help thinking, if only the entire planet got along as well as the couple of hundred people in this restaurant.  Everyone was enjoying themselves, happy and chatting away. The whole place was filled with loving speech and everyone having a good time.

Well, we are not responsible for the world, and what other people do. But we are responsible for what we say, and who we say it to. People used by pay a lot more attention to what they said, and how they said it.  There was more attention put on manners, ethics, morals, truth telling, and what words we spoke with.

You can change your life, and those around you, simply by using loving speech with your friends, family, coworkers, and those you meet daily.  Most people will respond to nice words, with being nice themselves. So you instantly get back, what you give out. And it snowballs, one person passing loving speech on to others.

Loving speech is a simple self healing technique. It works for you, and also those around you.

    Loving sounds. Thanks for reading.

Overtone Singing - Singing More Than One Note at Once, Even Chords.

                                                   Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

Overtone Singing is another form of vocal expression, that has been around as long as man has. You can find overtone singing, in many ancient cultures, all over the globe. Today mainly found in Tibet, Siberia, Alaska,  Native American Indians, Middle East, Western Asia, and South America.

Most people thing the human voice can only produce one note at a time, but overtone singers can produce two or more notes at the same time, even chords sometimes.  Overtone singing, also called harmonic overtone singing or tuva singing, works on the fact that any note the voice produces is also actually a chord that we hear as one note.

Every note has a root pitch or fundamental note. Then there are other notes, overtones of the basic pitch that are above and below the main note. Each human voice has its own overtone pattern, which gives each voice its individual sound. Each musical instrument, also has its own overtone pattern. That why a violin, piano, flute, and guitar, all playing the same note, have a different sound. Overtones allow us to tell the difference between human voices, and musical instruments.

Overtone singers learn to increase the vol of some of the overtones, so that you hear the original note, and also the overtone or overtones much clearer. Then it sounds like one is singing harmony or even chords with just one's own voice.

Some singers can even get melodies going above the bass note. Overtone singing is something you simply have to hear. It can be wild, also errie, also very relaxing and very beautiful.

Overtone singing has always been associated with healing and spiritual experiences. Just like singing, toning, and chanting. If one does enough singing, and chanting using a wide variety of sounds, one will sometimes do overtone singing, where you hear two or more notes at once.  So, learning to do overtone singing, is learning to do something that all voices have a natural ability to do.

If you want to try overtone singing, please see the library booklist, for books where you can teach yourself overtone singing. And see suggested listening for recordings of overtone singers.

   Happy Overtones. Thanks for reading.

Karaoke - Use Your Voice to Be a Star, at Least for a Song or Two.

                                           Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

Years ago, I was hired to start selling the very first singing machines or karoake machines in the US by a famous Hollywood star, who was going to import them from Japan. The deal fell through, and it took another 10 years for other companies to start selling singing machines in the US.  By that time, karaoke was a worldwide favorite. And it has been growing every year.

Karaoke, in case you've been off planet for a few years, is when the singer performs on stage to the recorded background tracks of a popular song. First made popular in Karaoke bars and clubs in Japan, it spread out everywhere. Because the whole world likes to sing.

Everyone at one time or another imagines themselves to be rich, famous, a movie or singing star. And Karoake singing allows you to be a Star, at least for a few songs. And if you are too shy to sing in a club, or at a karoake party. You can practice first at home. One can get small singing machines for under $50 or you can even get Karoake software for your computer. Or you can spend thousands on fancy setups, like in the bigest singing clubs. One can also get a special kind of midi karoake files, where your soundcard plays the backing tracks and the song lyrics scroll by.

Karoake is good for building self confidence and gaining stage experience in clubs. Its also good for your mental and emotional health to pretend you are a star. You make that active shift from being a music listener to a music performer. Of being the effect of others music, to making your own music.

You can get recordings of almost any song ever recorded. Some background companies, even duplicate the hit version of the hit recordings exactly. So if you have favorite songs or like any you hear on the net or on the radio, chances are there is a karoake recording of it.  Most recording have the vocals on one side to practice with, then the other side or other tracks are without the vocal.

So don't overlook karoake singing, as a self healing technique and as a way to start making music as a performer, instead of just a listener. Its another fun way to use your living human voice for singing, what nature has designed it for.

Drum Circles - Using Rhythm for Self Healing and Creativity.

                                 Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

What kid doesn't enjoy playing or pounding as the case may be, on some drums.  And even most adults if given the chance, will gladly beat a drum. Its fun, and rhythm is built into all life. The earth moves around the sun, the stars turn in the heavens, seasons come and go, our heartbeats and other body functions all have a rhythm.

Music healers, therapists, activity leaders, teachers, all know how much fun, and how much healing can be had with drums and other percussion instruments. Today there are groups like Rhythm for Life using rhythm with young kids, senors. And major drum makers sponsor drum clinic nationwide. People are attracted to rhythm.

As music became more global, more world music practices spread around the globe. One of those was Drum Circles. Getting together with others simply to express one's self by beating a drum.

A friend of mine and his wife were into Drum Circles. And I knew they even led them outside in a big park. They were always inviting me to come to one of the drum circles. Finally, I went to a drum party and was hooked after that. I knew there were hundreds of different kinds of drums, but most I had only seen on tv, or in pictures.

This was my first chance to beat on drums, as small as finger tom, toms, and drums larger than a person. And every size and shape inbetween. Each different drum has its own tone colors it can produce, and you can have lots of fun seeing how many different ways you can beat the drum. A large roomful of people all using different drums can produce a lot of sound. Not only does the air and entire environment beat to the drum energy, so does your entire body.

A couple of mo's later I went to a larger drum circle outside in a big park. As you got close to the park, you could hear the throb of the drums. The sound travelled for miles. And soon it was like being in the jungle, in the middle of a Tarzan adventure. There was a large circle of drums, and people simply played one for a while, then stepped aside, and someone else took over. The circle got larger or smaller, as those bought or left with their instruments, so the sound was always changing.

All you need is yourself for your own drum circle. If you don't have a drum, almost anything around the house will do. Coffee cans, pots and pans, salt shakers, cups, telephone books, etc, all can be beat on, or shaken or rattled. And one can even get a little Yamaha electronic keyboard , with drum pads, and have an entire percussion and other orchestra of sounds to experiment on.

Some music software will also let you use your soundcards drum sounds, and play them via your computer keyboard. Spacebar bongo drums, anyone? Or Mouse Hi Hats?

While though of mainly as a rhythm instrument, some drums can play multiple tones, even melodies. I had a beautiful African box slit drum for years, it produced 8 different pitched notes and was very soothing and melodic, if played in a peaceful manner.

Drums, percussion, rhythms, are just like other sounds. They can be healing or destructive, depending on how one uses them, and how they are played.

Don't overlook the simple beauty and healing that can be found in drums and other rhythm instruments. Especially if used with positive rhythms that are good for your heartbeat and your brainwave rhythms.

Happy Rhythms. Thanks for reading.

Playing A Musical Instrument for Self Healing.   Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

People who sing and play musical instruments live happier and healthier lives. Making sound with our voices, or with other musical instruments, surrounds us with living creative sound. Sound vibrations that affect us, down to the very cells in our bodies.

Even if you sing, well other musical instruments like the piano and guitar can be good for accompanying singing. And there are dozens of other musical instruments one can pick from to make music with.

Some of the more popular ones are marching band instruments like trumpet, trombone, sax, tuba, xylophone, flute, clarinet and piccolo. The orchestra adds violin, viola, cello, harp, bass, bassoon, and others.  And many countries like Russia, India, Africa, Iran, Peru, Italy, Greece, Spain, Scotland and many more have musical instruments of their own. If you want to make music, there is an instrument you will like enough to learn to play it.

The desire to make music is inborn. Every child enjoys playing and singing. And unless other kids and adults cause us to forget our desire to be creative with music. All adults have a natural desire to make music also. It is healing to do the things that are inborn and natural desires. A creative outflow in music making, keeps us happy and healthy. For making music and sound is one of the natural skills all have.

One does not have to take lessons for years or be a child prodigy to have fun making music. It's the act of making music that is important, not the skill level one has. Anyone can get good with effort and practice.

Technology has given us new instruments like the synthesizer and the computer soundcard. And many different kinds of music software can give one many new ways of studying and making music.

So, express yourself in making music. It's very self healing and very uplifting, and may lead you through doorways only music and sound can take you through.

Happy Music. Thanks for reading.

Composing - Create Music to Share with and Help Heal the Universe.

                                              Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

Even when I was a very small child, I used to daydream and dream of composing music. All the other music skills I picked up in life, guitar, singing, songwriting, arranging, programming synthesizers, and teaching music all combine in composing music, what I have loved to do for over 30 years now.

I started humming ideas into a tape recorder, scribbling words on pieces of paper, messing around with whatever chords I knew.  Once you get into creating your own music, it justs grows and goes on from there. Later I studied songwriting, arranging, and composing with some of the best teachers in the world.

And I made sure  I learned from life. Getting ideas and letting my imagination go. Each composer tends to let their viewpoint and beliefs about life shape their music. I have strong spiritual values, believe in the healing ability of music and sound, and am an incurable romantic, always having a very positive view of love, both human and divine. So the intent of my music has always been to express, spiritual values, healing, and love.

I believe all music is either positive or negative, and as composers one makes a choice on which kinds of music to compose. Either healing or destructive music.

Many famous composers have no real music skills, they hum into tape recorders, and then get friends and relatives to help them from there. Few know how to read and actually write music. Even many film score composers hum ideas or use a computer to help them compose.

Composing is about expressing musical ideas. Not how many music schools and degrees you got while studying composing. Some of my best pieces were done years ago, when humming was my only composing skill. Over the years my new skills just let me finish ideas quicker. Speed and a knowingness that this is the right note or the right chord for the job. Still a stack of synthesizers won't help the idea, if it doesn't sound good when you hum it.

If your computer has a soundcard, you may already have all the composing hardware and software you need. Music software provides many wonderful composing aids, from helping you get ideas, to getting your ideas turned into sound, to printing and recording finished music.

Many fine books are out there on writing music and lyrics for songs. Any library or good music store or bookstore will have books on songwriting. Songwriting is one of the most popular kinds of composing today.

There may be composing or songwriting classes in your town. You can learn a lot by interacting with other composers and songwriters. I used to go to this great songwriting workshop a couple of times a week when I lived and taught music in Hollywood years ago.

One can also compose by ones self or with a composing partner. Normally one person does the music, and one does the lyrics. But some composing partners do both music and lyrics. And if you have a band, don't overlook the music that your band might be able to compose. You may be one of the next Beatles.

Composing is a very enjoyable music healing activity. Sharing your music and sound with others, offers many great opportunities for personal, musical, and spiritual growth. Give composing a try. You may be the next Bach or Beethoven.

     Happy Composing. Thanks for reading.

Improvising - Making the Music Up Here and Now.   Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

All children are good improvisers. They make up songs, and music games all day long. Making up your own music, even if very simple tunes, lets you use those natural childhood music skills.

Try humming whatever pops into your head. When's the last time you whistled while you worked, or while walking down the street. How long has it been since you beat a drum, played with a slide whistle, or a kazoo. When's the last time you simply made up a song, just for the joy of it?

Improvising music gives you complete freedom to make whatever kinds of music and sound you can imagine. There are no right notes, or wrong notes. Anything goes.

Its not often one gets to do something in life with so much freedom. There are so many rules, and laws, and do this, don't do that. And a lot of music, especially most classical music allows zero improvising. So improvising vocally or with any music and sound producing instrument can be very healing, freeing, and uplifting.

Allow yourself a few minutes of complete freedom each day, and try some improvising, making up some music, just for you. Its one of the most enjoyable creative and human activities I know of.

      Happy Improvising. Thanks for reading.

Sounds - Use them for Self Healing.     Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

An obvious place to start with any music and sound healing program is simple sounds. No knowledge needed of music for that. But we live in a sound world, and if we don't choose some of the sounds around us each day, we will simply be the effect of everyone else's sounds. And there are a lot of negative sounds out there, that can be very harmful for us. So for balance and good health, we want to use positive sounds of our choice when we can.

Sounds effect every part of our body, mind, emotions, and spirit. We can hear only in a certain sound range with our physical ears. This is good for we would go deaf or worst, if our hearing range was wide enough to hear all the sounds our bodies are always making.  All our cells are constantly making and absorbing sounds. Down at the atomic level, everything is simply vibration or sound.

Making sound with our voices, is one great way to outflow sounds that can help heal us and keep us healthy. That's how singing, chanting, toning, loving speech, and vocal sounds work. We are feeding the rest of our bodies sound food, when we make sounds. Research has shown that even deaf people are happier and healthier when they use their voices for sound and music healing.

Simply playing with sounds, either vocal or nonvocal, will lead you to sounds you are greatly attracted too. These are the kinds of sounds you want to use in your daily life. Note what kinds of sounds always make you real better. Do you love the sounds of a car, or a train, or a plane. Do you enjoy the sounds animals make? Do you like nature sounds, waves, bird songs, rain, thunder, snowstorms, wind, and other outdoor sounds?

You don't have to wait to go to the places those sounds are found. Bring the sounds to you. Imagine being in a forest say, and make the sounds you would hear there. Or one can get a tape or cd of music combined with sound effects. Like the sound of water, turn the shower on low, or make a waterfall in your kitchen sink.

Be creative. Kids books are full of sound ideas. Especially preschool books that are simply pictures and sound words, like creak, groan, swish, drip drip, hum. Part of why live concert recordings are popular is that you have the extra non musical sounds of the audience, cheers, claps, laughs, coughs, etc.

Sounds can create an environment so real that our imaginations go there. Old radio programs or even new ones, have to use sound, just sound to create the environment of the radio show. Since we create the rest with our imaginations when they follow the sounds. Some computer and video games are great for using sounds that take us right into the game.

Once you note which sounds you like best, and which sounds seem harmful for you. You can as much as possible avoid the negative sounds, and get your daily dose of positive sound.

Many sound researchers are trying to discover certain kinds of sounds that may even cure major diseases. The same way, hospitals use laser light which is just a different octave of sound vibrations manifesting as visible light.

So, discover what kinds of sounds can help you now, and use them. Sound can do many amazing things that can help you stay healthy and speed up healing when you need to be healed.

Happy Sounds.  Thanks for reading.

Using Your Computer for Music and Sound Healing.   Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

Most computers today come with soundcards and music software. This opens up a whole world of musical possibilities. Some as simple as playing back your favorite cd's, midi files, and digital audio files like wav files, and mp3's. Or as a desktop music teacher, using music software for music lessons, and studying composing. The computer can also be your recording studio, recording music for you, and also the performers who play it back.

The computer with the help of music hardware and software can wear many different music hats. So many, that there are many different ways you can use the technology for Music and Sound Healing.

Want to compose, there are many great software packages that can help you. Want to print out music you have written, computer scoring software can print sheet music, as simple or as complicated as your needs. Want to take music lessons, no teachers in your area. Music lesson software can give you the equal of a couple of years worth of music lessons. Want to learn to program a synthesizer and create sounds. Software can help you do that also.

Want to loop some of your favorite sounds over and over for a sonic background. The computer can easily do that. Want to record your voice. No problem for the computer.

The first computer I purchased almost 20 years ago, was to make music with. Same for the ones I have now. I think of the computer as being a musical instrument, and that's what it does best. The fact that the computer can add or do word processing is nice, but not as useful as how one can use the computer to be creative with music and sound.

So start exploring the musical possibilities different music software and a simple soundcard can offer you. Even the cheapest soundcard can have over a couple of hundred different musical instrument and percussion sounds on it. Plus a couple of dozen sound effects. That offers a lot of music and sound fun.

We are in the computer age. Use the computer for music and sound healing, and its becomes even more useful in our daily life's.

Happy Computers. Thanks for reading.

Dancing to Music and Sound Can Heal You.    Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

When's you last time you went out dancing? Or even danced at home by yourself or with someone? Making music is great, but moving to music is simply using rhythm and sound in a different way.

The body loves to move, and moving to music is one of the best leisure activities there is. Its also great exercise for your living instrument.

There are as many different ways to dance as there are people. There are hundreds and hundreds of different styles of music to dance to.

Square dancing, line dancing, two step, waltz, ballroom, and hundreds more, each country has many different dances. And music to go with them. All waiting for you to dance to them.

Think of the dance as a song, and you are a note that moves through the song. If you don't know the actual dance steps for the music playing, you can simply make up your own dance. Making up your own dances is a lot of fun, and lets the body move in many healthful ways.

All kids love to dance, and most adults also. Its good in life to do the things you loved as a kid, and also the things you love as an adult. Especially if you have a desk job, or any kind of job with limited movement, dancing offers a way for the body to keep itself healthy.

New kinds of dances are always being created. Especially by teenager's and other young people. Dancing gets put to more and more special uses, also like therapeutic dance, in healing centers, or aerobic dancing in gyms and health clubs.

Many spiritual groups have dances. One of the most famous is the Sufi's whirling dervish dance, where you chant and spin around and around, much like a child does out in field.

Dancing gets you actively involved in moving to music and sound. This using both dancing and any music or sound you dance to, in a combination way of healing. If you love to dance, love to move, give a few minutes of dancing a try. It can do wonders for you.

Happy Dancing. Thanks for reading.

Community Bands, Choirs, Orchestras. The Healing Powers of Music by Joining a Group.

                                                                        Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

Making music in a group like a community band, choir, or orchestra can be a lot of fun, and can be a great way to make friends and meet people who also love making music. In decades past, especially when recorded music didn't exist, getting together to make music-well, everyone simply did it. It took care of social needs, also the build in human need to be creative musically.

Back before WW2, whistling choirs used to be a big thing. There were hundreds all across the country, and people would simply get together and whistle songs, and arrangements of songs for whistle choir.  Every town, even the smallest ones, had a bandstand in a park, that was the center of the towns social and musical activities.

Everyone sang, in church, in schools, at dances, even at work. If you wanted to hear music, you had to make your own. And just like now, the piano, violin and acoustic guitar were very popular. Also very popular was the banjo, which was much louder than nonelectric guitars, the harmonica, and the accordion, the portable piano of its day, also many homemade instruments, like washtub bass, tin can drums, bells, whistles and jews harp.

The banjo and the accordion were so popular, that there were entire orchestras made up of all banjos, also all accordion's. And a good singer was so popular, that people would travel for days, to get to a live concert of the top singers of the day. Back before WW1, before any recordings or radio, singers used to stand on street corners and sing the songs of whatever sheet music they were trying to sell. Like newspaper boys, and street performers today.

And one heard live music everywhere. And when you hear a lot of live music, it sometimes can inspire you to play and make more music yourself. And playing and or singing in a group surrounds you with live sound. This live sound of music is very important for health.

Every student in school used to study music, and was a member of the band, choir, or orchestra. Or sometimes all three. And the best players and singers were the school jocks of their day. Once attention moved to sports instead of music, and simply pass anyone, no matter how poor these basic reading, writing, math, and other schools skills are, music fell by the wayside, as far as many school music programs were concerned.

Today one can graduate from high school, and college and their only music class might be MTV, or what they hear other young people playing on their ghetto blasters. All music is either helpful or harmful, healing or destructive.

You can guarantee yourself some sound health, by being in a choir, band, or orchestra.  If your community has one, try to find time to join. If not, maybe you can help start one, by dusting off your voice, or an instrument collecting dust in a closet. And if that's impossible, go to live choir, band, and orchestra concerts. Most schools, churches, have some kind of free or almost free concerts.  And your town or city may have some also.

You want to be an active music maker, as well as choosing positive music to listen to, as much as possible. Getting together with others to make music in a large group, like community choirs, bands, orchestras, will pay you back in fun, and better health. Now that's healing.

Happy Group Music Making.  Thanks for reading.

Family Music Making Keeps Your Family Healthy.   Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

I was born into a musical family. My father played the piano, and sometimes directed the church choir. My mom sang, and everyday made up songs around the house. My two brothers both ended up in classical music for a living, and we grew up on classical music, musicals, barbershop singing, Perry Como, later the Beatles, Elvis, etc. Musicians were always dropping by the house with their instruments. My favorite, a Russian gentleman with his 8 string Russian guitar, he also had a lovely daughter my age. A little romance is good at any age.

Studies have been done for decades on the positive effects on good music on IQ, heart, brain, and emotions. And the most famous teachers, philosophers, doctors of ancient times, all left writings about the positive effects of music on both kids and adults.  And they were all writing about making music, as well as listening to it.

Singing is one thing all family members can do together. It helps to pass the time on long trips, or as an alternative to a bed time story. Holiday songs, church songs, school songs, kids songs, funny songs, there are endless songs to choose from. And one can even make up songs, for even more song fun.

If you have a vcr, there are lots of sing a long video tapes. My favorites are the Disney ones. One can also sing along with favorite musicals, past or present. And just about any song can be found in a karoke version.

The entire family could even take a music class. Or study at home, through vcr lessons, or music lesson computer software. A great family music making tool is one of those little Yamaha one finger auto everything synthesizers. I have 2 of them. My newest one was a music store piano class demo unit, it was only $95, so it doesn't cost a lot to add family music making to the family budget.

The family that plays together does stay together. So there are lots of other benefits besides the good health ones. So be sure to put family music making on your list of daily activities.

Happy Family Music Making.   Thanks for reading.

Listening to Healing Music and Healing Sound for Good Health.

                                      Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

In America today and some other countries, more people listen to recorded music, on tapes, cd's, radio, tv, than make their own music. So many are allowing themselves to be the effect of whatever music they are listening to. That's fine, if your music listening is mainly positive healing music, but many choose or allow others to choose for them negative or very harmful music.

Many people have totally lost touch with their inner and outer senses. And our so confused by decades of media hype, that they have no idea what effects music has on them or anyone else. I was just reading a newspaper article today, about a small music label, that had 32 very successful cd's last year, simply packaging classical music favorites under titles such as Music For a Romantic Evening, Music for Dining, Music to Relax You, and so on. The same kind of music packages can be found for jazz music, new age, country, and other kinds of music.

Its a no brainer to decide if music is bad or good, because all life is affected by the music.  Even animals and plants can show you which music is good or bad, if you need some help remembering how to tell positive from negative music. Once you get tuned back into your survival senses, your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual states can easily let you know what kinds of music and sound are good for you.

Good for you music, will have a positive effect on your heart, brainwaves, blood pressure, blood circulation, emotional state, mental state, and uplift you spiritually. Good for you music can relieve pain, increase your energy, get you above your daily problems, and spark your creativity for solutions to your problems.

One can find positive and negative music examples in most styles of music. But as a rule of thumb the following music styles are the most healing and uplifting.  They combine rhythms that are good for you, melodies that are healing, and healing harmonies. Also the intent of the composers are to uplift and inspire.

Classical music by Beethoven, Bach, Hayden, Mozart, Strauss, Wagner and the other great composers, who tried to write music with and about the highest ethical, moral, and spiritual values. Some 20th century composers also wrote in the uplifting classical styles such as Ralph Vaugh Williams, Rockmaninoff, Richard Strauss. In one word this music is beautiful, and even humming the themes can take you to a place of beauty and healing.

Old time music such as ragtime, barbershop, happy blues, cowboy songs, and uplifting songs about love, God, family, and country also has many tunes that were composed to uplift and heal.

After WW1 and WW2, music expanded so much as to what was allowed, that all the new pop styles of the 20th century became very broad. And labels may refer to music of decades that can have many positive and negative examples in them.  But as a rule of thumb, anything that makes you feel better, kinder, gentler, more relaxed, more energy filled, more loving, and puts your attention on love, God, family, and the highest ethical and moral values , including those of the composers can be healing.

Country music if positive rhythms, and lyrics, anything that doesn't make you angry or depressed or simply reach for a drink. Blues and R and B if happy, bright, flowing, makes you want to whistle or dance for joy. Rock, only if old style, early rock, before it became all gonad, sex, and drug music. Avoid hard rock, acid rock, most alternative, and all death metal. Jazz only if positive rhythms, and melodies, and nice harmonies. Big band or swing is the best, also latin jazz, which has positive heartbeat rhythms, like bossa nova. Good mellow or medium tempo jazz can give an overall feeling of freeing and flying out of the body on sound. Bubble Gum Teeny Bopper Pop and Rap , only the positive upward heart opening music. And there are many examples of positive music in the new styles of world music, and new age music. Also negative, so learn to know, which are good for you.

New age can be positive, can also be a total turn off. Depends on the composer and what he has composed, how, when, where, what, and why. There is the standard put you to sleep stuff, the energy enhancing stuff, the stuff with hidden messages, hidden octaves, and sub octaves, the drug stuff, the god awareness stuff, the brainwave stuff, the Indian stuff, African, nature sounds stuff, etc. Mainly new age is too much instrumental for me. Especially the relax in this trance stuff. For some reason most new age artists completely ignore the human voice, the most healing of all musical instruments.

Also under new age you will find many kinds of music and sound that simply don't fit anywhere else. New Age with a beat, blends of world styles, space music, etc. A fun place to browse in, and well worth your time to find some artists and composers you really like.

Film scores are only as good as the film and the composer. John Williams, easily the best symphonic uplifting type of film scorer. If Beethoven scored films, they would be like his best ones. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman, etc. Don't overlook film soundtracks of movies you really, really, really love.  They can be your classical music.

For variety, nothing beats a trip to the world music bins. Are you Italian, Irish, strongly attracted to Africa, India, China, Peru. The world music bin can have something very healing just waiting for you. Take advantage of listening booths and rooms. And look for music that makes up feel and be better everywhere.

Music has an immediate effect. The pulse, blood pressure, circulation, tension and stress, muscle strength, nervous system functions, emotional state, mental state and spiritual state, all react to sound and music instantly at the first note.  We also react to the intent of the composer, because in creating the piece of music, the intent is audible in every note, and how it affects us.

If you need more relaxation in your life, turn to relaxation music. If you need more joy in your life, turn to joyful music. If you need more peace in your life, turn to peaceful music. If you need more love, turn to loving music. If you need the presence of God and Spirit in your life more, turn to spiritual music. And if you need healing, and want to stay healthy, turn to healing music and sound. Its your choice everyday.

Happy Listening. Happy Healing. Thanks for reading.

Avoiding Destructive Music and Negative Sounds for Good Health.

                                            Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

Its a no brainer to decide if music is bad or good, because all life is affected by music.  Your body, mind, emotions and spirit can let you know what kinds of music are angry, violent, and harmful. It doesn't take much effort to see what kinds of music promotes and encourages drug addiction, promotes and encourages crime, especially violence against women and murder. Watch what happens to the performers and composers of music written to promote anti family values, music written to increase and encourage alcohol abuse, music that wants to destroy anyone's beliefs in God. Music that is anti all decent ethical and moral values.

But you can only make good music choices if you are drug, anger, and alcohol free. One who is addicted and has a death wish, is going to pick music that speeds up his death, and often those around him too.  Even plants and animals will choose to avoid destructive music and enjoy healing music.

The most harmful kinds of music are heavy metal, acid rock, much alternative rock, heavy dance, heavy trance, negative country, negative blues, atonal jazz, atonal classical, avaunt garden electronic noise, true black magic voodoo and gangster rap.

Heavy metal, also called death metal, is so destructive, it has caused thousands of violent suicides, and murders worldwide. And untold numbers of rapes, drug addictions, and other illegal acts. The vol level of the music is so loud, that only attending one concert without earplugs can permanently damage your hearing. The loud beat is designed to feel like someone is actually beating on your body with a metal club. The music is designed, composed and played to purposely be as destructive as possible. The rhythms interfer with the normal heartbeat and brainwave functions, the shrill, harsh, screaming guitar riffs, can hard boil an egg placed on the stage. The lyrics are so violent, often encourage those listening to go out and rape and murder. Fights, riots, stabbing's, gunshots, usually occur during the concerts themselves, in the parking lots, the same night, and the morning after.

Listeners are brainwashed to commit violent acts, on a daily basis. One usually sees a movie, tv show, or reads a book only once. But out of balance teens and adults can play the most violent and perverted songs over and over and over again for hours daily. Till they actually go out and commit the violent crimes, which is the whole purpose of the songs and music in the first place.

A normal person avoids this kind of angry, violent music. If you work in a club, do security at a concert hall, or have some kind of job that makes you listen to music that could kill you. Be sure to wear earplugs, balance it out with healing sounds as soon as possible, and find a new job.

Much of rock music is harmful also. You really have to have the awareness of a rock to write, perform, and listen to harmful music and sound. Or be under the influence of anger, alcohol, and drugs. Even the names let you know how harmful the music can be, hard rock, acid rock, alternative rock, dance, trance, jungle.

The worst of the worst will have Warning, Explicit Sex and Violence Advisories on them. Avoid anything with this label, especially if you are a parent and have kids. Subject matter that couldn't even be made into a movie or book, because it is so violent, degrading, and pornographic, will hide under the media label of artistic freedom, which bows down only to the money gods of lust, greed, attachment, anger, and vanity. All you have to do is pick up these recordings, and read the titles of the songs. Remember, a violent or porno song can be listened to, for hours, and hours, and hours, and can brainwash one in becoming exactly like the song.

The repetition factor is often overlooked in studies of how easily music can violent behavior. And music has a much stronger physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual impact on us. Music's effect is much greater, than print, film, and tv combined.

Gangster rap is so full of violence, it may create a higher body count than heavy metal.  It is racist music, that reduces all those of a dark skin color, to one giant street gang, where drugs, prostitution, murder, rape are looked upon at being the ways one should live and die. Much of the rest of rap music is the same. Shock Jock noise, that isn't really music at all, just destructive sound. There is some positive rap, even God rap, but you have to really know your rap artists to find it. And even then, the rhythms, may be bad for you.

Much of Country music exists only to sell beer and hard liquor. Avoid the downer, depressing lyrics, even when hidden overtop of bright music. This is emotional soap opera stuff, with never a happy ending. If you listen to this kind of music daily, your life can end up just like the music.  C and W is board enough, for the uplifting, spiritual stuff, so go for that. Same for bluegrass and folk music. You have to pick carefully in any kind of music to avoid the really negative stuff.

Blues and R and B are also board enough to cover a full spectrum. Avoid the harmful, depressing, no hope, why bother to stay alive sounds. Go for their opposites, the happy blues, which are the original blues, the spiritual blues, akin to positive gospel, the energy enhancing R and B that makes you truly feel so good you want to dance, and you want the whole world to dance with you.

Jazz and classical music are also board based in their effects. Avoid the atonal, dissonance, unpleasant, no rhythm, no melody, no harmony, noise music of the so called avant garde classical and jazz composers.

The best jazz is the mellow big band, and latin jazz like bossa nova. It can open the heart, and can give an experience of great freedom. Just the opposite of the negative jazz. Which is about the same as heavy metal as far as effects go.

The best classical is still the great romantic composers, who express love, freedom, upliftment, divine love, in their music. Heroic music like John Williams best film score stuff.

The safest record store bins to buy music in, are the new age, world, and classical bins. The odds of coming up with something really harmful are less there. The odds of getting a really bad music experience increase as you go into the pop music bins. And are almost guaranteed, if you shop in the death metal, alternative rock, and rap bins. Use a listening booth, if available. Pick for your health., even if you have favorite performers.

Many physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, family, relationship, and job problems, are directly or indirectly caused by the music we listen to each day.  Music can drain you, make you tired, annoyed, easily upset, angry, impatience, and even violent. Or it can be energy enhancing, restful, loving and healing.

Pick for healing, pick music for your health. Your whole life and those around you can change for the better.

Happy Listening. Thanks for reading.

Some Simple Ways to Test a Piece of Music for Its Healing or Harmful Effects on You.

                                                                         Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

Here are a few simple ways, you can test any piece of music for its healing or its harmful effects on you. You will need a watch to check your pulse, a pen and paper. A notebook would be good, if you want to keep a Music and Its Effects on You journal.

We are going to check for physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual effects of music. Put down the day of the week, date, and time. Plus any especially great or not so great things that happened in your life today.

I will also give you some ideas on how to use plants and animals to test your music and sound environment. Music that is bad for you is also bad for your plants and animals. Music that is good for you is also good for your plants and animals also.

1. How does the music effect your pulse? The strength and rhythm of your heartbeat?

2. What are some other physical effects music and sound can have?

3. How does the music affect you emotionally?

3. What are the ways music affects my mind?

4. How does this music affect me spiritually?

5. Music and Its Effects on Plants, Growing Fruits and Vegetables.

All music is either harmful or healthy. Music affects all life, even the plant kingdom. Plants put next to speakers will either grow towards the music or away from it. Putting a small radio tuned to a classical music station in your garden will cause fruits and vegetables to grow bigger, will give higher yields, and will taste better also, due to being healthier. Positive music can also keep pests away from your garden. If you have a farm set up a bunch of small outdoor speakers, and then use an outdoor radio or cd player for playing healthy music for your crops.

6. Music and Its Effects on Animals.

Even animals are affected by music, either good or bad. Positive music will cause cows to give more milk, chickens to lay more eggs, livestock will grow fatter and be in better health. Negative music will cause cows to give little or no milk, chickens to lay little or no eggs. Livestock will get ill, and simply not put on weight normally. Give your animals, especially household pets, positive music also for their health.

All music, affects you physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. All music is either harmful or healthy. Choose music that is healthy for you and avoid harmful music.

Happy and Healthy Music. Thanks for reading.

Creating Your Healing Music Environment.

Healing Sounds vs Harmful Sounds    Copyright © 1975, 1980, 1999 Timothy Kelly

Sound is like music, in that all sounds are either healing or harmful. You want to have healing sounds in your sound environment, and avoid harmful sounds as much as possible.

VOL LEVEL : The first way in which a sound can be harmful is its volume level.  All extremely loud sounds can temporary or permanently damage your hearing. There are very few extremely loud natural sounds, except during natural disasters and other unusall storms. Most extremely loud sounds are man made. And manmade devices can boost any healing sounds up to harmful vol levels.  Here are some examples of extremely loud sounds to avoid for your sound health.

AIRPLANES taking off and landing, CONSTRUCTION NOISES like jack hammers, power saws, heavy equipment. LIVE ROCK MUSIC, ANY LIVE MUSIC PLAYED TOO LOUD, ANY RECORDED MUSIC PLAYED TOO LOUD, ESPECIALLY WHILE USING HEADPHONES. GUNSHOTS , some TOY GUNS also.

Sounds of some LAWNMOWERS, some POWER TOOLS, some AUTO POWER TOOLS, Police and Fire SIRENS, Any Extemely LOUD CITY NOISES, a very NOISY BAR or RESTAURANT, a very noisy CROWD at a sporting or other event. CAR STEREO TOO LOUD.

Any Sound in the WORK Environment that is EXTRA LOUD. Machinery Noises, Assemby Live Noise, Factory Noises, Noisy Computer Hardware.

Any Sound in the HOME Environment that is TOO LOUD. Screaming Kids, Blenders, Juicers, Meat Grinders, Vaccum Cleaners, Some Appliance Noises, TV COMMERIALS, or SIMPLY TOO LOUD TV, Any Stereo or Radio or CD Player Turned UP TOO FAR.  A Dog BARKING REALLY LOUD.

If the sound is manmade you can protect yourself is turning it down. If this isn't possible, use earplugs. Earplugs can save your hearing, especially where crowds, live music, loud work environments can't be avoided. Small earplugs can fit in your pocket or purse, and new designs fit well, and still allow you to hear normal vol level sounds ok.

PITCH: Extremely high or very low pitched sounds can be harmful. These can come from power lines, buried cables, malfunctioning devices, and other man made objects. USE EARPLUGS, MOVE AWAY FROM THEM.

RHYTHM: Some sounds have a rhythm that interfers with the bodies internal clocks, the natural rhythms of the heart, and the natural rhythms of your brainwaves. These can be as simple as water dripping a certain rhythm, or some kind of car noise. If you seem to be getting tired, angry, annoyed for no reason, check for a harmful rhythm sound in your environment. In modern society, it's usually the sounds of live or recorded music that have harmful rhythms. But any man made object, that produces sound, can be putting out a harmful rhythm, especially in the work environment. A harmful rhythm can cause problems even at low volume levels.

TONE QUALITY : Some sounds have a tonal quality that we simply can't stand. The voices of our mother in laws, : ), chalk squealing on a chalkboard, the sounds some birds and other animals make, squealling tires, static, irregular hums, constuction noises, machinery noises, feedback, very harsh shrill sounds, grating sounds, explosive sounds, sirens, pounding sounds, screams, wailing, whinning, and very angry sounds. All the background sounds in an environment can combine to create a environmental chord or sound that we just can't stand to be around. Really real bad vibes.

Healing Sounds will have vol levels that are not harmful. Pitches that are not extremely low or really high. Tonal Qualities that we find pleasing, pleasant, fun, peaceful and loving. Some examples of very Healing Sounds are. ALMOST ALL NATURE SOUNDS, Water, Rain, Waterfalls, River Sounds, Brooks, Snow, Bird Songs, Wind, Crickets, Animal Sounds, and other natural outdoor sounds. VOICES OF THOSE WE LOVE, Husband, Wife, Girl Friend, Boy Friend, Kids, Other Close Relatives and Friends. Favorite Singers. Sounds that Sooth and Relax, Energize Us. SOUNDS OF THINGS WE LOVE, Events, Places, Things, Favorite Childhood Sounds. Let your favorite sounds guide you in discovering healing sounds for you.
